There is no better way to discover the historic Champagne hillsides, which have UNESCO World Heritage status, than by climbing up to Hautvillers. This beautiful winegrowing village, clinging to the slopes to the south of the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park, boasts two panoramic viewpoints. From here, the view stretches into the distance towards the village of Cumières, town of Épernay and River Marne. The sea of vines and forest that caps the peaks are the key features in this outstanding Champagne landscape.
The advantage of climbing up to gain a view is that it reveals the beauty of the landscape and allows it to be more easily understood. This is particularly true of the Hautvillers panoramic viewpoint. A listed natural site protected by France's environment law, the viewpoint perfectly highlights the exceptional nature of the historic hillsides. The two viewpoints created in the village enable visitors to gain an understanding of the landscape’s features. The forest overhangs a sea of vines, beyond which the agricultural plains stretch away into the distance. This symbolic trio gives the region a unique identity.
However, the sweeping view is far from being Hautvillers' only attraction. The village claims to be the birthplace of Champagne due to the presence and foresight of a 17th century monk from Hautvillers Abbey, who played a pioneering role in the creation of Champagne. The memory of Dom Pérignon still lingers in this village, whose picturesque narrow streets and wrought iron trade signs, eateries and champagne producers delight visitors.
